Niagara Falls: the trip on the Canadian side

Niagara Falls, Canada

Niagara Falls Canada is located just across the river from Niagara Falls New York with the great waterfall situated right between these twin cities. The Canadian side offers the best views of Niagara Falls and has a very different character than its counterpart in the USA. Niagara Falls Canada is much more commercialized and tourist oriented than Niagara Falls USA. The streets are filled with museums, souvenir shops, gaming arcades, restaurants, clubs and tourist attractions of all kinds. If you don't mind all of the commercialism, Niagara Falls Canada offers more to see and more to do than Niagara Falls USA

Niagara Park Commission
The Niagara Parks Commission not only extends a hearty welcome to all visitors but also provides one of the most extensive and beautiful parks in the world. The Parks system runs practically unbroken for some thirty five odd miles along the edge of the Niagara River between its source at Lake Erie and its outlet at Lake Ontario. Through this stretch of gardens and clipped law'ns the traveller is not only in almost constant view of the winding River but also on the route of the principal historical sights. the several excellent restaurants maintained by the Niagara Parks Commission, the Canadian view of the American and Horseshoe Falls, the upper and lower rapids. the Whirlpool and General Brock's Monument.

At the upper end of the Parks system and opposite the city of Buffalo. stands the faithful restoration of old Fort Erie with its wealth of historical associations and its fine collection of relics. At the end of the route at Lake Ontario, stands the picturesque restoration of Fort George and Navy Hall. both important relics of great interest.

To rush through this long and interesting stretch. rich both in beauty and history, amounts almost to an unpardonable sin. Travel-wise people are more apt to allow at least two days for the passage providing time for an unforgetable meal on the balcony of the Parks Restaurant in full view of the Falls and an evening viewing both the American and the Horseshoe Falls bathed in the radiance of a billion candlepower from a battery of lamps in Victoria Park. (See Appendix for schedule of lights and Restaurants maintained by the Niagara Parks Commission.) It is also to be noted that the Parks Commission has provided picnic tables along the river and excellent picnic grounds at Fort Erie, Niagara Glen. Brock's Monument and Niagara-On-The-Lake.
The Rock Called Table
Table Rock is named for the site on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. At one point, a flat rock or 'table' jutted out over the Horseshoe Falls and opposite of the vantage point at Prospect Point Park on the American side.
The rock was visited by the people of the First Nations for many years as sacred place, but it was made famous by the visit of French explorer and priest Louis Hennepin around 1680-1681.
In 1818, the first part of the rock collapsed and the next major part collapsed in 1848. Other collapses occurred in 1828, 1829, 1850, 1862, 1887, 1889 and 1891. The last part was manually removed in 1935.
Today the area retains the name as a Table Rock Point Park and the Table Rock Restaurant.
Horseshoe Falls: The view from the rear
To take the trip we enter Table Rock House, pay our fee, and apply in the basement for the fine rubber coverings that keep us dry as tinder while we gaze wide-eyed from the mouth of the tunnel through the solid rock and look out behind the great curtain of water back of the Horseshoe. An elevator takes us to the entrance, the thunder of the cataract reaching us in truly frightening volume. Here as the thrill supreme! How excitedly we shall tell your friends back home how we stood behind the Falls
: and saw thousands of tons of- silver water pass before our eyes. A fascinating experience indeed, and we will not so much:as wet a shoelace, thanks to a noble piece-of engineering.

Many years ago, long before the present tunnels were built, daring visitors were invited to accompany one 'Thomas Barnett to what was called Terminal Rock, which was back of the Horseshoe, being reached by a wet and jagged path. Once the perilous journey – and it was perilous in those days – was made, each adventurous soul was given a ceritificate testifying to the fact that its holder had made the journey.
Before we leave the vicinity of Table Rock House we
may wish to view the unusual floral displays and the Oakes ' Garden Theatre, named in honor of the late Sir Harry Oakes, the once-poor prospector who "struck it rich" in the north Canada wilds His beautiful home stands on the hill above. The schedule for the various blooms to be found in these fabulously beautiful gardens will be found on one of the pages in the back of this book. The sight is a "must" for lovers visiting during the growing season. We find he the horticultural perfection reached by English garde at its best. These English have green fingers indeed!
